Expats came to US in search of…

The reasons why they left their home countries are various, but may be divided into 6 main categories: better life (30%), job (19%), studies (13%), love (10%), adventure (9%), family (7%) and others (12%). Some of them wanted to earn more money, some others wanted to explore job opportunities, while others came to study or to reunite with their loved ones.

What the immigrants miss the most about life back home

More than half (52%) miss their family and friends still living in their home countries. About 27% miss the food, the familiar taste of the traditional dishes from the country where they lived for so long. Some of them were really specific: Goa sausages, a good steak, pastries. Some of the reasons (9%) are weather-related: warm weather, sun, snow, seasons. 5% of the US immigrants don’t miss anything about their lives back home. What was the funniest thing respondents mentioned when answering this question? “I miss my bed”!

What they like the most about their current lives

Stability, financial comfort, and traveling are the main three things US immigrants enjoy about their current lives. They also appreciate the new people they met and communities they discovered in the US, which gave them the opportunity to enrich their cultural perspectives.

Their hobbies are…

Traveling, sports, gardening, cooking, gardening, social works, watching TV, reading books. The survey showed that hobbies don’t change that much after moving to the US. Awkward hobbies? “Watching the bills” said an expat from Mexico.

How do they stay in touch with their loved ones back home?

Calling (53%) and internet(43%) are the most frequently used methods to keep in touch with the family and friends back home. KeepCalling is their favorite company for initiating calls or for sending international top ups, due to the low rates, great quality calls and easy to use service. Also, they try to travel home whenever possible, depending on their time and financial resources.

What they do for a living

Their current jobs are various, ranging from “grandparenting”, driving trucks to jobs in the IT field, engineering, education or the medical system.

Generally, they are satisfied with their lives as expats, with their new lifestyle, with the comfort and stability of the jobs they have. Mainly, they miss their family and friends who are still living in their home countries, but they compensate this by calling them often. Because of that, they feel KeepCalling is a reliable partner for keeping in touch with people back home.
