San Diego, California (PRWEB) May 02, 2015
Sepsis Awareness Month is now listed on the National Health Observances monthly calendar, a service from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services at HealthFinder.gov.
Sepsis Awareness Month was established by Sepsis Alliance in 2011 to draw attention to sepsis and to promote sepsis awareness activities during the month of September. During Sepsis Awareness Month, survivors and family members are encouraged to share their sepsis stories through a variety of means, including social media. In addition, healthcare facilities and professionals are encouraged to hold events, such as lectures and workshops, to set up booths, and distribute sepsis-related information to staff and visitors.
“Last year, the Centers for Disease Control made the important step of recognizing September as Sepsis Awareness Month,” said Tom Heymann, Executive Director and President of Sepsis Alliance. “As we continue to work to raise sepsis awareness among the general public and healthcare professionals, being listed in the HealthFinder.gov calendar increases the exposure for our activities during Sepsis Awareness Month. We are very thankful for the listing, and look forward to this Sepsis Awareness Month being our best ever.”
Commonly referred to as blood poisoning, sepsis is a medical emergency that occurs when the body’s response to infection begins to injure its own tissues and organs. Some estimates put the annual sepsis death toll at 258,000 people in the United States alone. Sepsis is a preventable condition requiring early diagnosis and rapid treatment; yet, fewer than half of Americans have ever heard the word “sepsis.”
